Abstract

Squid pen-derived ¥â-chitosan nanofibers (ChiNF) were obtained using an aqueous counter collision (ACC) method - a typical top-down process to produce nanofibers of natural polymers - according to different number of ACC treatments (pass) as a variable. Transparent free-standing ¥â-chitosan films were solvent-casted from aqueous acetic acid (AA) solutions of ChiNF, raw ¥â-chitosan powder as well as their mixture, of which dissolution time, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and tensile test results were compared to reveal the basic structure-property relationship. The ACC-derived ¥â-chitosan ChiNF retained the crystalline and chemical structure of the raw ¥â-chitosan with a slight decrease in the crystallinity index. In addition, the mechanical properties of the free-standing ¥â-chitosan films could be tuned according to the relative amount of ChiNF and ¥â-chitosan raw powder.
